Here's How Much You'll Pay for Sony's PlayStation Handheld

Sony’s handheld streaming device for the PlayStation 5—now officially known as the PlayStation Portal—will cost $199.99 when it launches later this year.

Sony first introduced the product in May under the name Project Q. At the time, the company said the handheld device has an 8-inch screen, but unlike a Steam Deck or a PlayStation Vita, the device can’t play games from its own hardware. Instead, it leverages the PS5's Remote Play feature to stream the game experience over the internet from the customer’s own console to the PlayStation Portal.

Hence, Sony is describing the device as a remote player. “PlayStation Portal is the perfect device for gamers in households where they might need to share their living room TV or simply want to play PS5 games in another room of the house,” the company adds.

The PlayStation Portal is “capable of 1080p resolution at 60fps” while offering the same feel as a DualSense wireless controller. It requires a Wi-Fi speed of at least 5Mbps to stream games, although a 15Mbps rate is recommended. Along with built-in speakers, the handheld also includes a 3.5mm audio jack for wired audio, but the product doesn’t support PS VR2 games. Surprisingly, the device also can't be used to access PlayStation Plus Premium’s cloud streaming.

For now, Sony is only saying the PlayStation Portal will launch sometime later this year. The company plans on sharing more details about pre-orders soon. In the meantime, IGN published a hands on with the Portal, which notes the Portal can remotely wake up a PS5, something other devices can't do. However, IGN says the device does not come with Bluetooth, nor can it run its own apps locally. Battery life also remains unclear.

Alongside the PlayStation Portal, Sony also shared more details about the company’s first official wireless headsets for the PS5. The Pulse Elite headphones will launch for $149.99 while the Pulse Explore wireless earbuds will arrive for $199.99.

Both products promise to offer a premium, loseless audio experience for gamers. They can also connect to a Portal device through PlayStation Link, Sony's proprietary wireless tech for audio. Details on pre-orders and the exact launch date will be shared in the near future.
