A video posted on Twitter claims to show the case for the rumored PS5 Slim console.
We first heard about a PS5 Slim last year when Insider Gaming claimed it would not only be smaller, but offer the option of a detachable disc drive. Now we're getting to see what this smaller version of the PS5 looks like, assuming this is real.
As The Verge reports, the video was posted by Australian PlayStation repair specialist Better Way Electronics. Watch it below:
As you can see, it's considerably smaller than the current PS5 standard model, and the split casing does suggest the disc drive could be detached.
If it's real, then this is certainly a positive step for Sony. A smaller, lighter console means it's cheaper to manufacture and requires less packaging, allowing more of them to fit into a shipping container. Cost savings are therefore significant, which also means the price could drop at retail.
If Microsoft is to be believed, the PS5 Slim is going to launch before the end of 2023 and it will cost $399.99. If this is really Sony's intention, then we should expect it to appear before the holiday season really kicks off. Perhaps Sony will decide to match the launch day of the original and let us buy the smaller console on Nov. 19.
Anyone not willing to wait to purchase a PS5 will be pleased to hear Sony is increasing the SSD storage limit of the existing models to 8TB and adding support for Dolby Atmos. PlayStation Plus premium subscribers are gaining the ability to stream games at 4K, and there's a limited edition Spider-Man 2 version of the console currently available.
